UN Convention

The purpose of the International United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was approved in New York on 13 December 2006, and both the Convention and its protocol were ratified by the Spanish State on 3 December 2007, published in the Official State Gazette on 21 April 2008 and came into effect on 3 May of that same year, is to "promote, protect and ensure full rights and under equal conditions of all human rights and fundamental freedom by all persons with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity".

Over these first 5 years of effectiveness, there have been numerous actions that have been carried out by Fundación ONCE to fulfil our commitment with the publicising and implementation of the Convention, both on a national and international level. Hence, for example:

  • We carried out a cooperation exercise with CERMI in a project with Carlos III University, which resulted in the drafting of a report that analyses the impact of the Convention in our internal legal code and defines the legal reforms necessary to be fully compliant with the content of the Convention, which undoubtedly will represent a considerable boost to achieving such objective. • We produced in cooperation with Social Economy Europe a poster that graphically and with simple terms underlines, in three languages, the most relevant content of said International Treaty. SEE POSTER
  • We took part within the scope of the Sub commission of Experts on the Procedure for Modification of the Capacity to Act of the Royal Patronage on Disability, in the drafting of a proposal for adapting the Civil Code and the Civil Procedural Act to section 12 of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. http://www.servimedia.es/Noticias/DetalleNoticia.aspx?seccion=23&id=319885
  • In combination with Fundación Aequitas and the European Foundations Centre, we organized a session in Brussels to reflect on one of the key mandates of the Convention, section 12, regarding the legal capacity of persons with disabilities and the challenges raised by their implementation on a European level.
