APTRA program (Adaptation of work places, recommendations and technical aids)

The APTRA program, developed for use by human resources professionals, in the companies, in public administrations and in third sector organizations, is a support and information tool to adapt workplaces that will be or are being carried out by persons with disabilities.

APTRA is part of the global project supporting the occupational integration and improvement of quality of employment of persons with disabilities led by Fundación ONCE and co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development. It has been developed by Via Libre and Technosite companies of the FUNDOSA GROUP and FSC-Inserta with the cooperation of professionals from ONCE, FEAFES and FEAPS Madrid.

DOSEAP (Dossier of personal help elements in the employment environment)

Persons with disabilities sometimes need support products (technical aids) to carry out their work under equal conditions. Having these elements means finding real integration in the employment field. DOSEAP is a Dossier or Catalogue that encompasses around 140 job support products that can be selected when carrying out tasks that entail work places.

Biennial of Contemporary Art

The Biennial of Contemporary Art is an ambitious project primarily designed to recognize and publicise the work of artists with some kind of disability or those that have found inspiration in disabilities.

Its mission is to achieve the two fundamental objectives of Fundación ONCE: EMPLOYMENT: access of artists with disabilities to the Art market, achieving their social inclusion and occupational insertion.

ACCESSIBILITY: accessible culture for all working from different scopes of involvement: on one hand universal accessibility and on the other being able to enjoy culture under equal conditions.

The culture both from the perspective of artistic creation, and from enjoyment of works carried out by others, should be accessible to all persons with disabilities that seek to develop their skills and interests.

Cambio de Sentido (Change of Direction)

The 'Cambio de Sentido' room is an initiative of Fundación ONCE whose primary objective is to promote and encourage the employment of artists with disabilities. It is an art gallery located in Recoletos street in Madrid; conceived as a permanent space, its activities are organized so that consecrated creators sponsor new values in order to contribute to the integration of persons with disabilities, both on an employment and personal level within the art world.

Fundación ONCE, through this project, aims to promote the employment of artists with disabilities, proposing a space where they can show their works and make art their means of life and normalise the creative activity of artists with disabilities. In addition to exhibitions, other cultural activities are carried out.

The world flows, two views on one same reality.

Itinerant exhibition "El mundo fluye: Dos miradas sobre una misma realidad” (The world flows. Two views of one same reality) consists of a selection of works of the four previous editions of the Biennial of Contemporary Art Fundación ONCE held until now. With this exhibition, Fundación ONCE seeks once again to publicise the works of artists with disabilities among people, professionally related with the world of Art, or that have had the opportunity to visit the Biennial of Contemporary Art.

The sample consisted of works of artists with some kind of disability (physical, sensory, intellectual and mental disorder) or creators that, not having disability, used it as a means of inspiration.

The sample, which is multidisciplinary, combines works from very diverse authors, such as the photographer Gerardo Nigenda, or the painter Miguel Ángel Campano. It also has artists of renowned international prestige, such as Paloma Navares or Cristina García Rodero.

The selection of artists present spectators with multiple points of view in the interpretation of disabilities and consists of 30 works from 24 artists, 20 with disability and 4 that used it as the source of their creativity. The subtitle of two views on one same reality emerged from this nuance.

The selection of artists presents viewers the many different points of view in the interpretation of disabilities, both from artists with some kind of disability (physical, sensory, intellectual and mental illness) and creators that, while not suffering any disabilities, use it as a source of inspiration and driver of their creations; and stress the legitimacy of the difference and the enriching aspect that this duality entails.

Unicos, the other side of art

ÚNICOS is a set of documentaries consisting of 12 chapters showing the talent of artists with functional diversity sponsored by celebrities from the world of art.

Over the various chapters, the series seeks to promote and publicise the works of artists that show, through their work, their vision, feeling and life experience.

Each one of the chapters is headed by a renowned artists and one "Único" (unique) with disability that will jointly discover the reason for their work and life experience. ÚNICOS is the reflection of the work and personality of each artists, one of them with disabilities, does not matter who. We discover the reason of their work and life experience, endowing each episode with its own personality. In addition, they help to enrich the series as a whole.

Únicos and their Sponsors review with the spectator and in first person, the various artistic disciplines, discovering a unique vision of the world of art, life and their characters.

Blue flags

In this project Fundación ONCE works with the Association of Environmental Education and Consumers (ADEAC) in the definition and improvement of recommended criteria and ideals in a beach and to increase the level of information for consumers on the conditions they provide. Some years ago, accessibility was included as one of the criteria of Blue Flags. In this sense Blue Flag allows recognising certain minimum accessibility conditions that continuously improve, among other things, through the contribution of municipalities that recognise the need to offer accessibility improvements to all citizens.

International Congress of Tourism for All

Tourism has become and social phenomenon of extraordinary relevance that mobilizes millions of persons worldwide. Therefore, tourism is a social asset that must be available to all citizens, without excluding any group of the population.

Persons with disabilities take part with increasing frequency in tourist activities as a consequence of their increasing degree of financial and social integration. However, the barriers and difficulties of all kinds still persist and prevent many of them from regular and normalised access to tourist goods and services.

Suppression or attenuation of these barriers that limit tourism for persons with disabilities is a requirement of the principle of equal rights and opportunities. It shall also represent an effective measure to include new groups of citizens to tourism, contributing to economic growth.

The International Congress of Tourism for All seeks:

  1. Combine all agents involved in the tourist sector on a national and international level, to tackle accessibility as a need of the sector for its growth.
  2. Raise awareness on the reality of the needs and possibilities of persons with disabilities as tourists and therefore as a potential market.
  3. Analyse accessibility as a factor of quality and competitiveness.
  4. Open forums of knowledge and experience exchange to promote the optimum development of policies favouring "Tourism for All".

The Amóvil portal is an initiative led by Fundación ONCE, developed by Fundosa Technosite and sponsored by the Vodafone Spain Foundation, which has the purpose of helping people with disabilities and the elderly, to identify accessible mobile devices, which are in line with their needs and preferences. It is an interactive website that also offers information on the support products that are compatible with the various terminals and mobile apps that comply with the universal accessibility requirements and design for all. In addition, it publishes news and information on accessibility to ICT and promotes active involvement both of users and experts in accessibility, as well as manufacturers and companies related to mobile technology.

Project led by Fundación ONCE, consisting of an international consortium of 6 partners including the companies of the Fundosa Group Technosite and Via Libre. This Support Action, integrated in the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission, aims to identify, characterise and prioritise the solutions with greatest potential and improve access to air transportation for persons with disabilities and the elderly. The project started in 2012 and has a duration of 2 years.

Fundación ONCE is involved as a partner in this project of the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission led by Fundosa Technosite, within a consortium of 24 international partners. Cloud4all will design and develop and infrastructure that will simplify the selection and distribution of ICT support products (both downloading products and cloud executables), as well as access and activation of native accessibility capacities of new commonly used technologies (e.g.: Operating Systems, browsers, etc.). The Project is part of the concept of the "Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure - GPII". Cloud4all started in 2011 and has a duration of 4 years.

Fundación ONCE is involved as a partner in this project of the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission consisting of a consortium of 25 international partners. Prosperity4all focuses on the development of the necessary infrastructure to promote the support product sector and the creation of new accessible technologies in the cloud, improving connectivity between the developer and users and favouring the creation of new marketing methods of support products (pay per use of service instead of the licence).

Accessible Medication project

Fundación ONCE has carried out several activities to encourage accessible medication information, both for persons with disabilities, and of elderly persons and others in similar difficulties to read and understand the use of medications.

It has therefore signed cooperation agreements with the Spanish Agency of Medications and Sanitary Products, the Vodafone Spain Foundation, the General Council of Official College of Pharmaceutics.

One of the results of these activities is the 'Medicamento Accesible Plus' app, which can be downloaded for the main platforms:

Uninnova Network

UNINNOVA is the University Network of Accessibility Innovation of Fundación ONCE (UNINNOVA Network); its main objective is to contribute to a change in the University - Society paradigm that promotes knowledge transfer and collaborative development of projects between university innovators, persons with disabilities and social organizations.

For this, the UNINNOVA Network offers novel collaboration formats that allow naturally combining on one hand, the innovative potential of university researchers and on the other, knowledge and real demands of the group of persons with disabilities. In this way, UNINNOVA contributes to maximise the social impact of university initiatives thanks to better knowledge of skills and real needs of persons with disabilities from the earliest phases of research within the academic environment.

Multi device access to social networks

The web platforms that generate the most popular social networks currently present important barriers for the collective of persons with disabilities, as reflected in the last report published by the ICT Accessibility Observatory of Discapnet. Although it is essential for platforms providing access to social networks to be accessible, in order for this communication phenomena to not exclude collectives of persons with disabilities and elderly, it is also necessary to access them from different devices, not only the traditional desktop computer. The lack of accessibility of the interfaces, combined with the complexity of access devices, also limits the integration of elderly persons, not only those with disabilities, as in general they have been less involved in the development of the internet.

The goal of the project is based on promoting the involvement of persons with disabilities in social networks on the Internet through the design of a single accessible device that is compatible to multiple devices (IPTV, mobiles and conventional computers), which allow for interaction with the most popular social network platforms. The interface, in addition to being accessible, shall integrate support products when access is carried out by non-accessible devices. The project considers the dynamization and publicising of a social network focused on the design of accessible digital services. Áltera: Functional Diversity and Occupational Competitiveness program.

The basic starting point in this project consists in the evidence that, especially in some functional limitation profiles, people develop compensatory skills that can exceed in certain aspects those of the general population. For example, lip reading skills, even in noise environments, by persons with hearing deficit or special attention and interpretation of paraverbality of spoken communication (intonation, prosody, emotiveness, etc.) by blind persons, together with their hearing or spatial memory skills.

AEGIS (Open Accessibility Everywhere: Groundwork, Infrastructure, Standards).

The ÆGIS (Accessibility Everywhere: Groundwork, Infrastructure, Standards) is a project financed by the European Commission is part of the 7th Framework Program involving 20 organizations from several European countries (Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Sweden and Switzerland) and Canada. This initiative, led by Sun Microsystems, is supported by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Vodafone Spain Foundation, Fundación ONCE and Technosite, as Spanish partners. The objective of the ÆGIS project is to determine the third generation technologies that offer an approach where accessibility is included in the apps and devices of the leading Information and Communication Technologies (ICT):

  • computers,
  • internet, and
  • mobile devices (telephones and PDAs)

This approach shall be developed under an Open Accessibility Framework (OAF) that considers design aspects, development and rollout of the main Information and Communication Technologies. It will also provide accessibility solutions included in the devices, as well as tools so that the developers can include it (accessibility) in existing and emerging products of the Information and Communication Technologies market.

The key to the project is always place users and their needs in the centre of all planned developments. For this, ÆGIS will identify the needs and preferences of different user groups:

  • persons with visual disabilities
  • persons with physical disabilities
  • persons with cognitive disabilities
  • persons with hearing disabilities
  • persons with speech disabilities
  • elderly persons

It will develop and improve an accessibility resource based on free software for apps and ICT devices of the leading environments (PCs, mobile and internet).

All developments shall be assessed continuously in each one of the phases for a significant group of end users (persons with disabilities), developers and experts in 3 different phases and in the 4 selected countries (Spain, Belgium, Sweden and United Kingdom).

Fundación ONCE and Technosite (Fundosa Group) will mainly work in the part closes to users, attracting participants and carrying out user tests defined in each one of the project assessment phases. Furthermore, both organizations will coordinate an online user forum creating an area for discussion and exchanging ideas and opinions in which to bring users, experts and developers closer to the technologies developed in the project.

INREDIS (Relation Interfaces between the Environment and Persons with Disabilities)

The INREDIS project, approved in July 2007, is a CENIT project (National Strategic Consortium for Technical Research) that falls within the Spanish government initiative INGENIO 2010 managed by the CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technology Development) and led by Technosite, technology company of Fundación ONCE. The Project is based on the development of base technologies that allow creating communication and interaction channels between persons with some kind of special need and their environment. INREDIS develops basic research in the field of accessible and interoperable technologies during the period from 2007 and 2010. The budget of the INREDIS project is 23.6 million Euros.

The INREDIS project represents a re-focus in the use of technology. Until now there has been a trend to define technology advances in the form of "product modifications" so that it can be usable by persons with functional diversity. INREDIS seeks to make a technology leap based on the development of a system capable of interoperating with existing devices in the market and that is based on a universal interoperability protocol, so that it can adapt to new market stastandards, maintaining compatibility with the previous systems and being extremely easy to use. The scope of these technology results shall entail a great social repercussion on a global level as they will be an important advance in the field of accessibility for persons with disabilities and help to notably improve their quality of life.
