UN Convention
The purpose of the United Nations International Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities – approved in New York on 13th December 2006, the Convention and its protocol ratified by Spain on 3rd December 2007, published in the Official State Gazette on 21st April 2008 and in force as from 3rd May of the same year – is “to promote, protect and ensure the full enjoyment under equal opportunities of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all people with disabilities, and to promote the respect of their inherent dignity”.
The ONCE Foundation has worked in collaboration with the CERMI (Comité Español de Representantes de las Personas con Discapacidad – The Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disability) carrying out a project with the Carlos III University which has involved the drafting of a report which analyses the impact of the Convention on our internal law and which includes the legal reforms necessary for its adaptation to the content of the Convention, which will without doubt represent an important move forward in achieving said objective. In the international area special mention must be made to Act 54/2007, on the international adoption of children, which prohibits any discrimination for reasons of disability, in the declaration of suitability process. Ley y nota valorativa.
